There would be little to say about Leni Riefenstahl if, seven years after the Nazi Reich was buried, she had displayed a different attitude after 1945. But after 1945, continually stating that she had not been a member of the party, she attempted to give the impression that she had known nothing of the monstrous atrocities and crimes of the National Socialist regime. In reality, Leni Riefenstahl is one of the few German women who not only knew of the terrible crimes under which Germany’s reputation throughout the world suffers even today, and for which countless innocent soldiers today continue to be held responsible, but who witnessed them with her own eyes. Based on the object lesson that caused Leni Riefenstahl to fall into a faint in Konsky [sic] (Poland) on September 5, 1939, she was obligated to condemn the crimes of the Third Reich and to disassociate herself from them. Such an admission would have made a new start much easier for her.52
